The dataset provided includes point data for use in GIS that represents public rail crossings in North Carolina. Only crossings with open or inactive crossing statuses are included; closed crossings have been omitted from this dataset. Attributes for each crossing include the crossing's Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) identification number and the latitude and longitude of the crossing. Crossing location and status were verified by cross-referencing FRA public crossing database with North Carolina Department of Transportation Rail Division's crossing database, railroad company track charts and aerial imagery. Where in doubt, crossing status has been confirmed by contacting the rail company, land owner, or municipality within whose jurisdiction the crossing falls.
